At the Fantastic General Store, all job descriptions carry a small sentence that says employees have to perform other duties as assigned. At first, this may seem like a minor detail. You were hired to sell weapons, so you are probably going to mostly sell weapons. But at some stores, you are also expected to run front checkout due to staffing shortages or people calling off sick. Were you hired to sell ballgowns? You may be expected to sell furniture too, because the employee who usually does that quit. Love your job in the jewelry section, but hate dealing with the fast-growing beans in the garden department? Guess what, you are not exempt from helping with the fast-growing beans, if there aren’t enough people available to deal with them. My point, management needs to make sure there are enough people scheduled to run their respective departments for each shift, so that one department doesn’t have to borrow from another in order to function. People sometimes quit when they are often forced to do a job they didn’t sign up for. Customer service suffers since employees don’t know what they’re doing. Morale certainly goes down the drain when employees are forced to do a job they don’t like.
