At the Fantastic General Store, we have clearance items the same as other stores. Alice’s tea cakes expire eventually, and Pinocchio’s nose cream was a surprisingly poor seller. We have two options when it comes to marking down product: wait for headquarters to send down a list of markdowns, or mark the product down ourselves and take the hit locally. Obviously, we want to wait until headquarters gives us the okay, but sometimes they seem to forget that certain products exist. Seasonal need to go as soon as possible, since we don’t want to count them during the next inventory, and the sales floor looks strange if you still having bathing suits out in the middle of the Snow Queen’s winter. If a decorative item from housewares, like Aladdin’s brand of lamps sits around for two or three years without selling, that too should be marked down. My point, retailers need to keep track of what products they have and how well they are selling, so they don’t end up with a glut of unsellable merchandise.
